Timber or Screed - The Ultimate, Jigsaw Approach

ThermoBoard Timber or Screed (T/S) is a very exciting new development. It is unique and the subject of patent applications.

For the first time, the power of modern computing has been harnessed to make the design and installation of underfloor heating very simple and very quick.

ThermoBoard T/S makes it possible to achieve absolute repeatability of both heating performance and installation quality.

It has the potential to revolutionise the way underfloor heating is implemented.

The panels can be manufactured either as Screed Pocketed Polystyrene panels or as Timber-Floating Foiled Polystyrene panels.

As a result, its power can be applied to both screeded floors and to timber floors.

The principals are straightforward.

  • A CAD drawing is produced showing the floor plans of the areas to be heated.
  • A layer is added showing the precise position of the heating pipework taking account of any obstructions in the floor.
  • This is overlaid with the layout of the insulation panels which are to be set on the floor base.
  • The clever bit is that we get the computer to lift the pattern of the UFH pipework onto each insulation panel and turn this pattern into a unique program which can be used by our computer-controlled machining centre.
  • Each insulation panel is then machined individually, to create a jigsaw of panels which are simply set alongside each other on site.

Draw the pipe layout. Overlay this with the layout of the insulation panels.



Transfer the pipe pattern onto each panel. Cut each panel individually as a separate jigsaw piece.

Set each panel in place alongside each other. Press pipe into channel.

Installation becomes straightforward and quick.

The T/S insulation panels are set on the ground and heating pipe is pressed into each circuit. The Flow and Return pipe ends of each circuit are connected to the manifold assembly and each circuit is pressure-tested. Simple.

The same kit of panel jigsaw pieces can be delivered to different parts of the country and be installed by quite different sets of installers, and yet achieve the same high-quality installation and identical performance.

Using the principles of ThermoBoard T/S, it is possible to incorporate into the machining pattern additional channels to distribute the domestic hot and cold pipework as well and, on a separate layer, conduit for the electrical services.

And we are already applying these same T/S principals to chilled ceilings.

Because each panel is cut precisely, the pipe approaches to the manifold site can be made very neat. There is no need to cut channels into the insulation on site
